What Is a Notary?

A notary is a qualified lawyer who serves as an internationally recognized witness. In New South Wales, notaries are appointed by the Supreme Court and are listed on the Roll of Public Notaries, which is maintained by the Legal Profession Admission Board.

Notaries have a similar role to a Justice of the Peace, but their work is almost exclusively for documents that will be used overseas. The rules governing the practice of a notary, including the requirement for professional indemnity insurance, are very similar to those that cover practicing solicitors.
